our pecan festival
the time and place

The deer hunters will be taking to the woods this season on Saturday, November 4th and our pecan vendors will be set up and ready to deal in the heart of beautiful downtown Alto.

If you’re planning to overnight with us, you’ll need to reserve a room early.  Alto has two excellent lodging places--The Little Lodge and Grandmaw’s House.  Both are exceptionally convenient.  In both cases, you deal directly with the proprietors, and they’ll do whatever is necessary to accommodate you.  Our town thanks City Councilman Collins for his promotion of tourism in our community, especially his recognition and endorsement of our eating and sleeping places.
how the festival works

Our people bring their pecans into town and sell them, and there’s no lack of variety in their offerings.  There will be everything from unshelled pecans that are sold by the pound or bucket, to succulent nut meat in perfect halves, to pecan candies and pecan pies and cookies.  There’ll be an abundance of fresh produce and pickled and preserved fruits and vegetables from our gardens.  And honey and fresh grist-ground corn meal and grits from our corn patches.  We even offer our own recipes in our cookbook, which we’re extremely proud of.
In years past, the festival has been a great place to buy the fruits of the land, but it’s also been a stage for street performers.  And there are artisans offering a plethora of items that you won’t find many other places.  Things like three-minute caricatures and air-brushed tee shirts; and things with a little more sophistication like wood carvings, costume jewelry, painted canvases and even live plants.  And of course, expect hot dogs and corn dogs and cotton candy and snow cones.
how to join us

If you plan to come and shop, then mark your calendar and show up.  There’s plenty of accessible parking places.  If you’re planning to set up your fruit stand, snow cone wagon or artist’s easel, you’ll need to register and let us know what sort of accommodations you’ll need.  We’ll be posting details and a fee schedule within a few days.  In the meantime, just let us know if you have questions or need us to mail you an application for booth space.  The reservation map is filling in quickly, so don’t wait too long.  You can either phone or email Bonnie Magruder, who is handling the registration and assigning booth space.  She can send you the application forms and answer your questions.  If you email her to request an application form, be sure to include your daytime telephone number and mailing address.
